From Nurse to CEO: Patty Ostaszewski Celebrates 20 Years Leading HealthSouth Toms River
Originally hired as the evening nursing supervisor in 1989 at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Toms River, Patty Ostaszewski, RN, BSN, MS, CRRN, who is affectionately known as “Patty O” by her staff, has proven herself as an admired leader, healthcare and community advocate, and ballroom dancer extraordinaire for a Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore fundraiser.
Ostaszewski was promoted to the hospital’s chief nursing officer in 1992 and progressed into the CEO role in 1996. Through all of the years, her priority has remained high quality patient care. As leader of an inpatient rehabilitation hospital, she has proven that commitment through achievement of a Uniform Data Systems for Medical Rehabilitation® top 10 percent ranking for nine of the past ten years for inpatient rehabilitation hospitals in the country and through achievement of The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care certifications for its cardiac rehabilitation, brain injury rehabilitation, stroke rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation and advanced inpatient diabetes programs.
After completing her registered nurse coursework and training at Bayonne Hospital School of Nursing, she furthered her education and achieved a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a master’s degree in healthcare administration from New Jersey City University. In addition, she’s credentialed as a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator and as a Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse®. Ostaszewski has served with the American Hospital Association’s Governing Council for Long Term Care and Rehabilitation, New Jersey Hospital Association (NJHA)’s HealthPAC Committee, NJHA’s Rehabilitation Advisory Council, HealthSouth’s National Nursing Advisory Board, the board of trustees for the American Cancer Society, the board of directors for Ocean Health Initiatives, and on the board for the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore.
“I have enjoyed the pleasure of working with Patty during her 20 year tenure as a CEO. Over time, her passion for delivering superior patient care has gotten stronger. Her uncompromising commitment to excellence has created a culture of caring which is unparalleled,” stated Peter Mantegazza, president of HealthSouth’s northeast region. “I am honored to have worked with her and learned so much from her over the years. We are grateful for her leadership at HealthSouth, but we are even more impressed by all of the lives of individuals recovering from illness or injury that she has positively impacted over the years.”
To honor her many years of contributions and leadership, a surprise event was held on June 14 at the hospital and was attended by community healthcare leaders, employees and the leadership team for HealthSouth’s northeast region.
